1         The Syl ribbon

When creating a new document using the Syl template a custom ribbon is loaded. The ribbon is shown in the figure below:

2         Styles used in Syl

Syl uses different styles for different type of phrases. The following styles are defined in the type of style SBVR, which is the default style for Syl:

SBVR (Semantics of Business Vocabulary and Business Rules) is a standard of the Object Management Group (OMG) for describing business rules in a natural language. The standard itself is found on the website of the OMG. You will find SBVR version 1.2 here.

You can changes the styles according to your needs. See chapter Configure styles in the database for changing the Styles.

3         Configuration

Before using Syl, the location of the Syl database should be configured. Select the button Configure:

In most cases you will have installed the Syl database in C:\Program Files (x86)\Syl

Select the file syl.accdb in that directory. After that a default context should be selected. To  start select Bill of Rights.

The checkbox Show introduction screen at startup can be changed here and you can select a set of Styles. Two default styles are configured in the Database: SBVR and None.

4         Add a term, keyword, verb or name

If you want to add a phrase to the database, just select the phrase that you want to add. Then press the appropriate button Term, Keyword, Verb or Name.

After the button is pressed the phrase is added to the database and the style (Term, Keyword, Verb or Name) is applied.

5         Maintaining a phrase

After you have added phrases to the database they can be maintained using the button Maintain Phrases.

In the window Maintain Phrases:

  • The Plural or Singular phrase can be assigned.
  • Synonyms can be defined.
  • For Phrases with the type “Term” individuals (Phrases with Type “Name”) can be assigned.
  • For Phrases with the type “Name” Classes (Phrases with Type “Term”) can be assigned.


 

6         Term and Names

Terms are phrases that are used to classify individuals. Names are phrases which refer to an individual. Be aware that individuals can also be abstract things like a single execution of a process. An example is given in the picture below.

7         Configure styles in the database

Two default styles configured in the database 'SBVR' style and 'None' style. A type of style can be configured in the table TypesOfStyles.

In the table Styles individual styles can be configured. Options are bold, italic, underline and font color.

When you insert a table with terms and names a table will be inserted as shown below. The table is formatted using the table format style “SylTable”
